Is it art? Is it architecture? It's both!

The Watts Towers are uniquely LA. They were built by Simon Rodia, an Italian immigrant who essentially dedicated his life's freetime to construct these towers in what was then his backyard. The Watts Towers were more than 30 years in the making, and are an icon of art and architecture in LA. Rodia worked on the towers from 1921-1955 and constructed the towers by hand with steel, concrete, and chicken wire as the structural materials, with glass, pottery, and found objects embedded for ornament. One is reminded of the work of Gaudi when looking at the Watts Towers.

Getting There: The Watts Towers are accessible by car or train. If you need an address for the Watts Towers to plug into your GPS, use: 1727 E 107th St, Los Angeles CA 90002. That's the address for the Watts Towers Arts Center. To get to the Watts Towers by train, take the Blue Line metro to the 103rd Street Station.

Parking: Ample street parking is available free of charge.

Traveler Tips: The Watts Towers Arts Center offers tours of the Watts Towers Wednesday-Sunday  ($7 for adults, $3 for seniors/students). Although the Watts Towers Arts Center is closed on Monday and Tuesday, the Watts Towers are always visible from the street. The neighborhood has changed over the years since Simon Rodia lived in Watts, and today Watts is not the safest place for tourists. Please exercise caution when roaming the neighborhood, but don't be deterred from visiting the Watts Towers during the day as the area is usually policed and monitored.
